The next morning, Callen comes down the hall just as I’m setting the milk on the counter. Smiling, I wave him over.

“I didn’t push it last night, but you really need to eat. I made some eggs and toast with jam, but there’s also cereal in the pantry if you’d rather have that.”

Callen shakes his head. “Eggs and toast are fine, thanks.”

He doesn’t look as tired as before, but the bags under his green eyes are still there. I imagine it will be a long while before he’s truly rested.

Wait, what?

I do a double-take and go as far as leaning in to get a better look at his eyes. I stare, mouth agape, even as Callen takes a hasty couple steps back with a frown.

“What the hell are you doing?” he demands.

“Your eyes…” I trail off, half-wondering if I’m going mad.

Now he just looks self-conscious. “What about them?”

“Have you looked in the mirror today?” Callen shakes his head, confused as hell. “Well, you should. Like, right now.”

“Why?”

I shake my head. “Just do it. Seriously. You need to.”

Callen sighs, muttering a sharp “fine” before heading to the bathroom like I demanded. Three seconds pass before I hear a loud, “Fuck!”

My leg bounces as I wait for his return. Thankfully I don’t have long to wait before he tears into the kitchen, looking frantic and panicked.

“What the fuck? Kieran, what the fuck?” I start to respond, but he just keeps going. “Eyes don’t just change from blue to green, Kieran. That shit doesn’t happen. What is going on?”

“Breathe,” I say a little too calmly. It just pisses him off, if his scowl is any indication. “We’ll figure it out. It’s probably your supernatural side showing itself. Twenty-one is a big deal for some creatures, and clearly, you’re one of them.”

Callen scoffs and starts to pace, food long forgotten. That makes me frown. “Supernatural? You’re still on that? Fucking hell, this is insane.”

“I can see how it comes across a little… odd. I get that. But it’s hard to deny it when your eyes have changed colors, so…” I trail off with a grimace. “You okay?”

God, what a stupid question, Kier. Jesus. What’s next? Going to ask him if he’s still sad? Fuck.

“No,” he deadpans, face eerily blank. “No, I’m not okay.”

I scratch the back of my head and give him a sheepish smile. “Yeah, dumb question. But hey, we’ll figure this shit out. I mean, your mom was a siren, so it’s hard to say what you are, but we’ll figure it out.”

“A supernatural. This is asinine. She’s not… wasn’t a siren. Neither of us are supernaturals.”

“Your mom was, and so are you. You can’t tell me you never noticed how strange some people got around your mom. There’s no way you missed the stalkers and shit that no doubt hounded her. Your mom was a woman of the water, alluring and captivating, able to lure anyone in, intentionally or not.”

“That’s not… There wasn’t… Fuck!”

I clearly hit the nail on the head. Poor Callen.
